WASHINGTON - It was a season unlike any other in Demon history and the eyewitnesses of the records celebrated it when the Washington High School cross-country squad named its team awards for the 2020 season.
'It was such a fun season and we are so thankful to be able to have had a full season,” WHS coach Stefanie Haworth said.
Lance Sobaski set new standards for the Demons with the first individual boys Southeast Conference title, the highest finish in a state qualifier with a second and the fastest time in school history, 16 minutes, 27 seconds.
He was named the boys MVP and Hannah Rees the girls MVP.
The Coaches Award went to Cameron Vongpanya and Josie Tanner.
Rookie of the Year went to Micah Rees and Abby Kleese.
Drew Horak and Molly Klinzman were named Most Determined.
Most Improved was William Kennedy and Cloe Telleen.
Sobaski always ran a smart, controlled race. He was able to accomplish his goals and was looking stronger as the year went on. As a team the boys ran well, improving throughout the year.
'They had a great season and district was a great meet for them,” Haworth said. 'The girls pack ran extremely strong at districts and we were able to beat Mt. Pleasant who beat us at the conference meet.”
In her final meet, Rees ran a personal record, beating her old time by 13 seconds.
'I am extremely proud of everyone but especially my seniors, they had a great season and ended their careers with a great meet running PR'S or just a few seconds off their PRs,” Haworth said of the state qualifier. 'They have been great leaders for the whole team all season and will definitely be missed by everyone.”
Seniors were Josie Tanner, Cloe Telleen, Sydney Cuddeback and Hannah Rees.
