WASHINGTON — Burlington football might have scored first Friday night in Washington, but that wouldn't be a representation of how the game played out.
After the Grayhounds took the opening lead within the first five minutes of the game, they would never score again as Washington rattled off 32 unanswered points on its way to a 32-7 win.
The Washington defense was flying around the field all night. Couple that with the play of quarterback Logan McDole and the likes of Mason Morgan and it wasn't close.
Burlington's opening score came after quarterback Gabe Robinson scored on a three-yard rushing touchdown. Two plays prior, the Demons had the Grayhounds at fourth down, but a 33-yard completion put Burlington inside the 10.
Washington opened with a three-and-out, but what followed was some stellar execution.
McDole, a junior, made plays on the ground and through the air all night long.
Washington followed up with a near six-minute drive that ended with McDole in the end zone, his first of three on the night, from five yards out. After the converted two-point conversion, the Demons led 8-7 and would never look back.
Midway through the second quarter, the Demons stopped the Grayhounds in their tracks once again.
After marching 50 yards into Grayhound territory, McDole notched his second touchdown, this time through the air, hitting a streaking Morgan on a fade route from 21 yards out. McDole punched in another two-point conversion to make it 16-7 with 6:05 left in the half.
That wasn't the last McDole and Morgan completion.
After another defensive stop, the pair struck for a second time.
This time, the Demons faced a third and 10 at their own 28-yard line. McDole dropped back and lofted the ball toward Morgan.
Morgan lept and hauled in the pass, but the play didn't stop there. He then blistered down the field in what was a 72-yard touchdown.
A two-point conversion later and the Demons' lead was up to 24-7 with 1:09 to go in the half.
The third quarter went by in a flash, with neither team finding points.
Washington put the finishing touches on the win with 6:41 left in the game as Kael Williams crossed the goal line from a yard out.
McDole led the Demons through the air with 108 yards and two touchdowns.
On the ground, McDole finished with 82 yards and one touchdown. Williams had 27 yards with his one score and Casen Evans had 10 yards.
Morgan ended with 93 yards and a touchdown in the receiving game.
Defensively, Chase Greiner tallied a team-high seven tackles. Evans followed with 5.5.
The Demons improve to 1-1 on the season with the victory.
In its next matchup, Washington will take on Fairfield (1-1).
