Washington football will play its first home game of the 2025 season Friday. The Demons (0-2) will take on Class 4A District 3 side Burlington as they aim to get their first win of the season.
Kickoff between the Demons and Grayhounds is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Case Field. Washington leads the series 4-1 since 2020.
The two sides met last season with the Demons notching a 14-7 victory at Burlington. Kael Williams rushed for 29 yards in the game and had 4.5 tackles on defense.
Now the Demons quarterback, Williams has completed 21 passes for 277 yards, three touchdowns with three interceptions through Washington’s first two games. He also leads the team in rushing with 152 yards and a touchdown.
Williams’ favorite target thus far has been sophomore Liam Roberts. He had three catches for 97 yards and a touchdown in Washington’s loss to Independence.
Clayton Evans leads Washington in tackles with 14.5 through two games. Blaine Rees (12) and Williams (10) are also in double figures so far this season.
The Demons have tested themselves against non-district competition so far. They battled against 2A No. 9 Mid-Prairie in Week 1 and fell last week to an Independence team ranked No. 8 in class 3A.
Burlington is headlined on offense by running back Keshawn Wyldon. He racked up 24 carries for 479 yards and seven touchdowns to help the Grayhounds defeat Fort Madison and Oskaloosa in their first two games.
Grayhounds quarterback Caden Zaugg has only attempted 11 passes this season. But the junior has been efficient with his opportunities, having completed six of those for 117 yards and four touchdowns.
On defense, the Grayhounds boast four players who have already hit double-figures in tackles. Burlington has come up with three defensive takeaways in its two games, all fumble recoveries.
