FAIRFIELD — The Washington and Fairfield boys clashed on Friday night in the two’s second Southeast Conference matchups of the season.
Both entered looking for their first SEC win, but after a big run by the Demons through the second and third quarters it was them walking away victorious, 79-56.
Through one quarter it was anyone’s game. Both squads dropped in 15 points through the opening eight minutes. The Demons looking as if they were going to create some separation late in the opening quarter after going up 13-7, but the Trojans brought it even with a 8-2 run in the final two minutes of the period.
The Trojans kept the run going into the second as Eli Zillman gave Fairfield back the lead with a lay in.
However, everything changed from that point on as Washington took over.
A three ball from freshman Nic Stone gave Washington back the lead and they would never look back. Stone’s bucket was followed by five points from Roman Roth and a two from Logan McDole to give the Demons their largest lead up to that point, 25-17.
It took Fairfield over four minutes to score after its first basket, but two’s from Axl Starr and Riley Perkins pulled them back within four, 25-21, but that’s as close as they would come.
Washington went on to top Fairfield in the final two minutes 11-3, which featured back-to-back threes from Roth and Stone, to give itself a 36-24 halftime lead.
The three ball played a major factor through the contest, as the Demons hit 12 total in the game.
The offensive fire power continued to play to Washington’s favor in the third.
Washington drilled five threes, four of which came from Stone, in the third period on its way to a 27 point frame. Fairfield matched what would be its highest scoring quarter of the evening, 16, but the Washington offense was just a notch ahead.
Heading into the fourth, the Demons led 63-40.
In the final period of the night, the two squads were dead even scoring 16 a piece.
Four players hit double-figures for the Demons, which included Roman Roth and Logan McDole with a game-high 19 points each. Drew Conrad and Nic Stone had 15 points a piece as well.
For Fairfield, Luke Konczal finished with 15 points and Riley Perkins followed with 11 to lead the Trojans.
With the win, Washington improves to 2-3 on the season and 1-1 in SEC play. Fairfield drops to 1-4 and 0-2 in the conference action.
