OTTUMWA — Both the Washington boys and girls basketball teams took the trip to Ottumwa on Monday night to face off against the Bulldogs.
When all was said and done in the nightly contest, the Demons boys were winners 68-49, while the girls lost in a narrowly decided game, 42-41.
In the boys’ game, it was all Washington from the jump.
The Demons wasted no time putting the ball in the basket as they led 22-8 after one. Much was the same in the second quarter as Washington outscored Ottumwa 21-11 in the period for a 43-19 lead.
Washington drilled 16 of 24 shots from the field in the opening 16 minutes of action.
In the third, Ottumwa gained a sliver momentum, but the Demons held onto a commanding lead heading into the fourth, 54-38.
Ottumwa scored the final seven points of the third quarter, which included a buzzer beating three to make it a 19-11 quarter for the Bulldogs.
In the fourth, the closest Ottumwa would come is 14, but Washington would hang on while taking the final period 14-11.
Ethan Patterson led the Demons with 19 points on the night. Logan McDole hit four deep balls and finished with 18 points. Aden Six added 16 points.
Washington improves to 7-6 on the season.
On the girls’ side, it was a back and forth affair for much of the night.
After one quarter, the Demons held just a one-point lead, 7-6. Washington was able to take that one point lead and turn it into eight, but not before a large run rallied the Bulldogs.
Ottumwa turned defense into offense, which transitioned into a 10-0 run by the Bulldogs and put them on top at the half, 21-19.
The two squads traded leads the rest of the night.
With 37 seconds left in the third, the Bulldogs hit a shot to put themselves up 33-31 heading into the final eight minutes.
In the fourth, it was anyone game.
With 3:33 to go, the Bulldogs drilled a three to make it a one point game in favor of the Demons, 37-36, after Washington put in six straight.
With a minute to go, back-to-back layups by the Bulldogs gave them the lead, 42-39.
Washington’s Alex Murphy was big down the stretch as she scored two with just 35.3 on the clock to cut the lead to one, 42-41.
After a missed one-and-one by the Bulldogs, the Demons got the ball with 11.3 on the clock and a chance to win it.
Washington got two chance at the game winner, but it wasn’t meant to be as Ottumwa escaped.
Adalyn Long led Washington with 17 points, which included five made three-pointers.
The loss marks the sixth straight for the Demons. They drop to 6-9 on the year.
