KEOKUK — Coming into Friday night, the Washington football team had simply dominated Keokuk over the last decade, coming in with a seven game winning streak in the series. The Chiefs, however, had everything working for them when the two teams met in 2023.
Washington had trouble moving the ball out a stout Keokuk defense, and the Chiefs’ balanced offensive attack was clicking all night, as Keokuk shut out Washington 47-0 on the Chiefs’ Homecoming night.
“We're trying to find an identity right now,” said Washington head coach Nick Ehret. “We'll have a positive play, and then we'll have a negative one right away.”
Keokuk quarterback Brenton Hoard burned the Demons for two rushing touchdowns in the first quarter. That made it 14-0 Chiefs early, and Hoard had plenty of magic left in him.
Hoard added to his two rushing touchdowns by throwing for four on the night. Keokuk led 33-0 at halftime and 40-0 after the third quarter.
“We just have to execute better,” Ehret said. “We knew Keokuk was good coming in. Their quarterback is good, and they've got some weapons.”
Washington’s best chance to score came in the fourth quarter. The Demons had a couple of tries from inside the 5-yard line, but quarterback Logan McDole came one inch short of a score.
“We can't move the ball offensively,” Ehret said. “We put our defense in bad spots, and we gave up some big plays in some opportune times.”
McDole completed three passes for 47 yards, and was picked off once. Luke Beenblossom had the longest reception of the day, a 23-yard catch and run.
Mason Morgan and Conner Leyden each had a catch on the day.
Kael Williams ran the ball fairly effectively, taking 13 carries for 60 yards. McDole ran for 24, and Alec Ulin rumbled for 19.
Ulin led the defense with nine tackles. Casen Evans had six. The only Demon takeaway came when Keith Summit recovered a fumble early in the third quarter.
Washington is now 1-4 this season. The Demons will try to turn things around on Homecoming next week, when they take on Mt. Pleasant (0-5).
