Fairfield Golf and Country Club was the stage for a top-ten, Southeast Conference clash Monday night as three teams ranked high in the most recent golf rankings released by the Iowa High School Golf Coaches Association did battle on the links.
Eighth-ranked Fairfield was joined by third-ranked Washington and 10th-ranked Mount Pleasant, and it was Washington that prevailed by the slimmest of margins winning by one stroke over Fairfield. The Demons have been a thorn in the side of the Trojans as of late and the two squads have shared the course three times in less than a week ? Washington has won them all, but Fairfield came the closest they have ever come this season.
The close finish is a result of major improvement as a whole from the Trojans, and Monday marked their fourth consecutive round shooting in the 150s. Fairfield ended with 155 ? 10 strokes ahead of Mount Pleasant?s 165 ? but one behind the 154 from Washington.
?The guys are starting to show consistency each time out,? said Fairfield head coach Mick Flattery. ?With this being the last week of the regular season, showing consistency with your depth is very important. Putting together the final touches on how to strategically play our course was also the plan in this triangular.?
Kyle Menke has certainly started to put on his ?final touches,? and the senior has completed rounds of 34, 35 and 36 on the course in the past three days with the latter coming Monday night and tied him for runner-up medalist honors with Washington?s Joe Harris. A Washington golfer also was the meet medalist as Braden Gaal fired a low round of 35.
Davis Lowenberg and Derek Byrnes filled in the No. 2 and No. 3 slots for Fairfield and each carded a 39 followed by Cody Kool?s 41 to round out the varsity scoring. Jordan Leazer?s 43 and Colton Fry?s 51 served as alternate scores for the Trojans.
