WASHINGTON — Washington and Fairfield soccer squared off on Monday night in the pairs final meeting of the season.
Much like the first contest between the two teams, one goal was all that separated them in the end. Once again, it was Washington who came out on top with another down to the wire win, 2-1.
Edwin Cortes kick started the goal scoring on what ended up being a shutout first half for the Demons. Cortes took the feed from Angel Mata to give Washington the 1-0 lead.
The Demons created some additional separation in the form of Lucas Lindsey, who slipped the ball into the back of the net, pushing the lead to 2-0.
That’s how the first half ended as Washington was stifling on the defensive side of the field.
That fact carried over into the second half as Washington held Fairfield scoreless for over 30 minutes.
It wasn’t until the final 10 minutes that Fairfield was finally able to break through off the foot of Jaxen Allen.
But that’s as close as the Trojans would come as they couldn’t find the means to tie or win it.
For Washington, Braedon Tappan had eight saves in goal. Dalton Drish finished with four saves for Fairfield.
Washington improves to 5-1 in SEC play, while Fairfield drops to 2-4. The Demons are now 8-2 overall and Fairfield 4-4.
Fairfield was also in action on Tuesday, taking on Ottumwa. The Trojan fell in that matchup 6-0.
