Washington soccer seniors feted
Girls defeat Mediapolis, boys lose in overtime
WASHINGTON — Washington split a boy/girl doubleheader with Mediapolis Saturday when it honored its seniors on the soccer teams by introducing each with their parents between matches.
With seniors Sarah Hall, Jaden Chalupa, Emma Calderon, Yulisma Torres, Trina Griffin, Emily Jeffrey, Taylor Brinning and Alivia Emry, the Demon girls shot down the Bullettes 11-1, invoking the mercy rule in the final minute to end the game early.
Seniors Noah Suchan, Zac Stout, Luciano Marcelino, Simeon Buie, Ayden Frazer and Daniel Marcelino all started in the boys match, which went to overtime.
Mediapolis had a quick through ball get past Washington’s defense with the help of the wind to create a one-on-one situation with goal keeper Dashaun Westphal-Edwards. Westphal-Edwards was able to repel the shot for his 12th save but not the rebound and the Bulldogs took a 5-4 win.
Mediapolis (2-7) took a 1-0 lead in the girls game on a set piece, but the Demons responded to lead 4-1 at halftime. Washington received scores from Trina Griffin, Greta Rothe, Audrey Anderson, Giselle Marcelino and Emma Calderon.
“We had a large number of players contributing to this victory as it was a great team effort and did not come about simply as a result of the efforts of a single player,” Washington girls coach Steven Caulk said. “The defense did an excellent job of breaking up attacking plays. Sarah Hall and Lindsay Diaz were particularly noteworthy for their defensive efforts.”
Washington’s boys were down 3-1 at halftime after kicking into the wind the first half.
Zac Stout, who is first in Class 2A and fourth in the state with 21 goals on the season, scored the lone Demon goal, then added two more in the second half for his fifth hat trick this season.
Emanuel Raymundo’s goal found the net off a corner kick on the right side of the field. Assists came from Emre Akgul, Bill De La Rosa, and Suchan.
Washington’s boys played Monday at Keokuk. The girls (4-4) play at Fairfield Thursday.
“It has been a privilege to coach this group of seniors,” Washington coach Sally Hart said. She noted each senior’s strengths
- Buie focus, ability to read the field, and leadership has made him a natural captain for our team. He shows up, works hard, and leads by example. Buie is a Pekin student who is going to Kansas State University.
- Frazer is a strong, hardworking player, who gives 100 percent at every practice and game. He is a true cornerstone of our defense. Frazer is going to study special education at Iowa Wesleyan and wrestle for the Tigers.
- Daniel Marcelino is one of the captains, has stepped up to lead preseason training and push the team during practices and tense games. The coaches are always appreciative of his “let’s do this attitude.”
- Luciano Marcelino’s hard work, teamwork, and good attitude have made him a fun player to both coach and watch play.
- Stout has grown into a phenomenal player. From his bicycle kick goal as a freshman to a forward who has hat tricks on the brain. Stout is going to Black Hawk College in Moline to study criminal justice and play soccer.
- Suchan is a big presence on the field, passionate, and competitive. He gives 100 percent every time he touches the pitch. Suchan will play whatever position asked, as long as it helps the team win.
