WASHINGTON — It was an eventful day on the pitch for the Washington boys and girls soccer teams Thursday evening against Burlington.
By the end of the two Southeast Conference clash, the Washington boys had win and their column and the girls a loss.
The Demon boys were winners, 4-2, while the girls were topped 5-2.
In the boys’ contest, the Demons struck early and often.
Fredy Aguilar got Washington on the board with an early goal just six minutes into the game of an assist from Brayan Arreola.
It didn’t take long before the Demons added an additional two goals. Arreola found the back of the net in the 14th minute, while Emanuel Raymundo added the third in the 16th minute off an assist from Emre Akgul.
Burlington was able to get one goal on the board in the first half, but at the half Washington was in clear control with a 3-1 goal advantage.
Washington picked up right where they left off in the second. DaShaun Westphal-Edwards added another point to the Demons total with a goal in the 51st minute of another assist by Akgul, making it a 4-1 ballgame.
The Demons controlled much of the possession in the half and while the Greyhounds were able to get another goal in the second, it wasn’t enough as Washington was able to hang on for its sixth win of the season.
Will Gilchrist-Brock made five saves for Washington in the game.
The Demons boys improved to 6-1 with the victory.
In the girls game, it was a tough matchup against the SEC leading Grayhounds.
The two teams battle back and forth throughout the first half with each tallying one goal, but it was the Grayhounds who would thrive in the second.
Burlington fire on all cylinders in the second half, scoring a plethora of goals.
By the final whistle, the Grayhounds had put four balls in the back of the net in the second half alone, opposed to Washington’s one.
The Demons fought to the end, but eventually succumbed to the pressure applied by the Grayhounds.
With the loss, the Washington girls drop to 6-2 on the season.
