Thursday was a tough day for the Washington boys and girls soccer teams.
On the contrary, it was a great day for the Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union boys and Mid-Prairie girls.
In a low scoring affair, Columbus downed Washington in a non-conference battle 1-0.
Mid-Prairie grabbed a win on the girls side with an exhilarating 2-1 victory over the Demons.
The match between Columbus and Washington was anyone's game through-in and throughout.
All it took to determine a winner was a goal in the ninth minute, coming from the foot of Columbus.
Washington took 23 total shots in the game, but could never break the seal on the goal.
Will Gilchrist Brock made three saves in the match.
With the win, Columbus improves to 9-4, while the Demons fall to 10-4.
On the girls side of things, Washington and Mid-Prairie gave fans a barnburner.
The Golden Hawks led after one half, but the Demons were quick to equalize after the break to push the game to overtime.
Neither team could find the goal needed to win in each of the two extra periods, sending the game to a penalty shootout.
Mid-Prairie prevailed in the penalty shootout 3-2 after Ainsley Lueck made the save on the final Demon PK.
Esther Hughes finished with one goal for the Golden Hawks. Kaitlin Martin also added one goal.
Ainsley Lueck made 11 saves in match.
Mid-Prairie improves to 8-5 with the win. Washington drops to 9-6 in the loss.
