WASHINGTON — Washington Demon softball saw victory and defeat on Wednesday night against Knoxville.
The Demons suffered a loss in the opening game of the doubleheader 3-0, but were able to get one back with a 4-2 victory in the second.
The opening contest turned out to be a defensive battle by both teams.
Knoxville got on the board early with a pair of runs in the second and one more in the third, which proved to be enough for the win.
The Demons had a great opportunity to put some runs on the board as they got the bases loaded with no outs after an error put Colbie Greiner on first followed by a double by Ella Greiner and Haley Mitchell was hit by a pitch.
In the next at-bat the Demons hit into a double-play at home then first and followed with a groundout to end the inning.
The rest of the way out the Demons put just one runner on the bases.
Leighton Salazar and Ella Greiner both went 1-for-3 in the loss.
Isabella Salazar threw from the circle giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits, one walk and five strikeouts.
Washington bounced right back in the second of two games.
After getting three quick outs in the top of the frame, the Demons brought the first runs across the plate in the bottom of the first.
Leighton Salazar scored the first run as she stole second, third and then home on a wild pitch.
With two outs in the inning, Ella Greiner delivered an RBI single scoring Lauren Hinrichsen, who sat at second after drawing a walk and stealing the base.
Heading into the second, the Demons held a 2-0 lead.
After seeing just four Panthers at the plate in the top of the second, the Demons added another run.
After a strikeout to start the frame, Kendall Hinrichsen reached first on an error by the Panthers and moved to second on a drop third strikeout.
Two batters later and Lauren Hinrichsen notched an RBI with a single that brought Kendall Hinrichsen home and pushed the Demon lead to 3-0.
An inning later and Knoxville pulled it to within one.
The Panthers scored a pair of runs off a Demon error after a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases.
Washington was able to limit the damage there, while holding onto a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the third, the Demons added some insurance.
Ella Greiner stepped into the box with one out in the inning and drilled a one run homer over the left center wall to push the Demons lead to 4-2.
That proved to be the final run of the game.
Washington was able to ride the arm of Halle Cuddeback the rest of the way out.
She would finish the night giving up just two runs (zero earned) on six hits, two walks and five strikeouts.
At the plate, Ella Greiner went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and a home run.
Lauren Hinrichsen finished 2-for-3 with an RBI as well.
Washington improves to 6-2 on the season. For Demon softball, it’s their best start to the season since 2012.
