MT. PLEASANT — The Washington softball team started the week with a pair of wins over Mt. Pleasant at home, and a couple of days later, the Demons were back at it again, collecting a 12-1 road win over the rival Panthers.
Washington used some middle inning magic to run by Mt. Pleasant in just six innings on Thursday night at Mapleleaf Athetic Complex. That secured the Demons’ season sweep.
“We were a little lethargic out of the gates,” said Demon head coach Ben Obermann. “It took us a time through to adjust.”
Indeed, it was the Panthers who had an early lead, as Mt. Pleasant scored one run in the bottom of the first and kept that advantage until the top of the third, when Washington would find its groove.
“We just stayed the course and played good defense,” Obermann said. “And then we started to string some hits together.”
The Demons capitalized on a couple of Panther misplays in the field to score four runs in the third inning, five in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Emery Walton had a big game, going 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and four RBIs. Haley Mitchell was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Lauren Hinrichsen, Bella Salazar, Ella Greiner, Colbie Greiner and Alyvia Anderson all knocked in runs.
On the other side, Mt. Pleasant was held quiet on the bats. Addison Clark did finish 2-for-3 with a triple, a double and an RBI, but the only other Panther hit was a Kynlee White single.
“Our bats were a little quiet tonight, but hats off to their pitchers,” said Mt. Pleasant head coach Mike Beason.
Salazar allowed just two hits over four innings and gave up just one unearned run for the win. Halle Cuddeback threw two shutout innings, and the two combined for eight strikeouts.
Mt. Pleasant’s Tyi Alter threw all six innings, giving up 12 runs (six earned).
Washington is now 8-4 overall and 3-0 in conference play. They will travel to Fort Madison (2-4, 0-3) in a Thursday doubleheader. Mt. Pleasant (2-7, 0-3) hosts Keokuk (0-5, 0-3).
