Demons deliver in ranked SEC bout with Grayhounds

WASHINGTON — The Washington softball team made a bold statement on Monday night as they opened Southeast Conference action with a dominant doubleheader sweep of Burlington.
The Demons’ showed resilience and just how good they can be on both sides of the ball, downing the two-time defending SEC champions 9-6 and 13-1.
In game one, Washington showed poise having to claw back from a 2-0 hole. The Demons ended up tying the game by the fourth inning and took it in the fifth.
Senior Demon Alyvia Anderson sparked the go-ahead rally with an RBI single to score Ella Greiner. Freshman Makenzie Messer followed with a big career highlight as her first career hit, a double, brought two more runs home.
Burlington answered back in the top half of the sixth with a trio of runs, but the Demons gave it right back. Messer and Colbie Greiner led the charge as Washington responded with a four-run outburst with the pair each delivering two-run singles.
Colbie Greiner and Leighton Salazar each finished with three hits apiece in the win. Anderson and Ella Greiner finished with two runs each. Salazar also swiped four bases.
Colbie Greiner pitched 5.2 innings, giving up four hits, five runs (four earned), five walks while striking out eight.
Game two was all Demons from the get. After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, Washington erupted for a whopping 12 runs in the bottom of the opening frame to put the Grayhounds away early.
Bella Salazar was a force in all aspects in the second contest. She drove in three runs on two hits, scored twice herself and shut down Burlington in the circle. Salazar pitched all four innings, allowing just three hits, one run (one earned) two walks with five strikeouts.
Now 2-0 in conference play and riding a six-game win streak, the Demons will look to keep in rolling against Mt. Pleasant on Thursday.
