WASHINGTON — It was a busy few days for the ninth-ranked (3A) Washington softball team, which played seven games in four days between Tuesday and Friday.
The Demons swept Knoxville on Wednesday night, winning games 12-6 and 2-1, then knocked off Mt. Pleasant for the third time on Thursday, winning 13-1.
Thursday’s rivalry showdown saw the Demons beat the Panthers for the 14th time in the overall series. Washington won behind a strong start by pitcher Halle Cuddeback, who gave up just one earned run on four hits, while striking out four batters in all four innings played.
Cuddeback was the third Demon to pick up a win over the Panthers last week. Bella Salazar and Colbie Greiner both scored wins in the circle on Tuesday.
“We're all just supportive of each other,” said Cuddeback after the game. “If one of us gets in trouble, the other one can come in and help us out.”
The Demons led 8-0 going into the fourth inning. Mt. Pleasant put up one run, but Washington responded with five more.
Offensively, Cuddeback also led the way, going 1-for-2 with three RBIs. Kendall Hinirhsen went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs. Alyvia Anderson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Leighton Salazar, Bella Salazar, Emery Walton and Rylee Libe all knocked in one.
Mt. Pleasant’s Kynlee White was 1-for-2 with a triple, and the team’s only run. Izzy Sloat, Emma Starr and Paityn Ensminger all had hits, and Chaley Cook took the loss in the circle.
Washington fell in a couple of tight games against good teams at the Iowa City West Softball Classic in on Friday. The Demons fell 11-8 to No. 15 (5A) Bettendorf and 2-1 against No. 6 (3A) Assumption.
The Demons finished the weekend 7-3 overall and 3-0 in Southeast Conference play. Mt. Pleasant is 1-6 and 0-3.
