WASHINGTON — The Washington softball team opened Southeast Conference play with two strong wins on Tuesday night. The Demon offense was on fire all night long, scoring 25 total runs in a two-game sweep of rival Mt. Pleasant.
Washington used an eight-run third inning to beat Mt. Pleasant 12-3 in Game 1. Game 2 saw the Demons finish the contest in just three innings, with a 13-1 win.
It took the Demons a bit of time to get going in Game 1. Mt. Pleasant’s Meadow Carter scored the first run of the game, reaching home on an error after a Saige Burchett groundout.
Washington, however, rattled the bats in the bottom of the inning. The Demons piled up eight runs in the third inning to bust the game open.
The Demons led 10-1 after four innings and 11-3 after five. Washington’s final run came in the bottom of the sixth.
“It took us a little longer than we would like, but I think Mt. Pleasant has improved,” said Washington head coach Ben Obermann. “We stayed the course in that third inning when we put the eight spot, right after they took the lead on us.”
The Demons capitalized on a 3-for-3 performance from Ella Greiner at the plate. Leighton Salazar, Lauren Hinrichsen and Emery Walton all had two RBIs in the win, and Bella Salazar, Colbie Greiner, Alyvia Anderson and Kendall Hinrichsen each knocked in one run.
Bella Salazar picked up the win, giving up one unearned run over four innings, while striking out six batters. Greiner gave up two earned runs over three frames.
Mt. Pleasant’s Kynlee White was 2-for-4 in Game 1. Addison Clark collected a pair of hits herself. Tyi Alter and Myah Star split time on the mound, with Alter being tagged with the loss.
Washington wasted no time in Game 2. The Demons put up four runs early and never looked back in a 12-run victory.
“The attitude was really good,” said lone Demon senior Haley Mitchell. “Especially in the start of the second game. We really stepped up in the second game.”
Mt. Pleasant’s Addison Clark connected with a solo home run in the top of the second, the only Panther run of the game. Washington scored seven in the second and two in the third.
“We could have had more runs in the first game, but in the second game, we really came out and scored runs fast,” Mitchell said.
Greiner went of fin Game 2, going 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Mitchell was 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs, and Kendall Hinrichsen knocked in two runs of her own.
Washington’s Halle Cuddeback gave up just one hit over three innings of work in the circle. Clark’s homer was Mt. Pleasant’s only knock of the game.
Mt. Pleasant’s Jolynn Martin started Game 2. She gave up 11 runs (three earned) on nine hits and one walk.
Washington moved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference with the win. Mt. Pleasant fell to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in SEC play. The two teams will play again, in Mt. Pleasant, in a one-gamer on Thursday night.
