WASHINGTON — Washington softball had a chance to take first place in the Southeast Conference on Monday night with a win over Burlington.
However, the Demons came up short in the doubleheader, 1-0 in game one and 11-0 in game two.
Game one was determined in the circle.
Washington’s Bella Salazar and Burlington’s Saydee Plummer showed why they are two of the best in the area.
Salazar did all she could from the pitcher’s spot, along with a stout defense behind her, giving up just three hits, one run (one earned) with three strikeout.
That sole run made up the difference as the Demons just couldn’t find an answer for Plummer. The Burlington ace, who leads Class 4A in opponent batting average (. 086) threw a complete game giving up just two hits with 12 strikeouts.
Neither team scored through the first three innings, but when the Grayhound’s Lillian Hand knocked in a run in the fourth, that’s all they would need.
Leighton Salazar and Emery Walton each tallied a hit for the Demons in game one.
Washington continued to struggle in the box in game two. The Demons once again finished with just two hits. It was looking as if fans were in for yet another tight contest as the Demon’s Colbie Greiner settled in early, but the Grayhounds hit their stride in the fourth inning.
A three run home run by the Grayhound’s Ava Fawcett sparked what would be a six-run fourth inning for Burlington. That was more than enough to win it, but the Grayhounds added two more in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Bella Salazar and Colbie Greiner each had a hit in the loss.
With the pair of losses, Washington drops to 21-9 overall and 11-3 in SEC play. The Demons have lost five straight.
