WASHINGTON — Washington softball dominated Fort Madison in the squads’ first two Southeast Conference meetings of the season.
But in the third in final bout of the year on Thursday the Bloodhounds got the better of the Demons, 12-3.
Things started out promising for the Demons as they shutout the Bloodhounds in the top of the first frame and delivered one run to take an early 1-0 lead.
From then on out the Demons would never lead again.
Fort Madison went on a scoring rampage, putting 12 straight unanswered runs on the board through the third and seventh innings.
Washington had opportunities to score throughout, but could never bring the runs home.
The Demons were able to add two more to their total in the bottom of the seventh, but they ran out of outs.
Washington had a total of seven hits in the game and all three runs were RBIs.
Alyvia Anderson finished with a team-high two hits in the game.
Leighton Salazar, Haley Mitchell and Emery Walton all had one hit and an RBI in the loss.
Ella Greiner and Lauren Hinrichsen each had one hit as well.
Isabella Salazar and Halle Cuddeback were in the circle for the Demons.
The duo gave up a combined 18 hits, 12 runs (nine earned) and four strikeouts.
Washington dropped to 10-6 with the loss.
The SEC matchup wasn’t the final game of the week for the Demons though as they headed up to Jesup for the Jesup Tournament.
After four games between Friday and Saturday, Washington ended the weekend with a 2-2 record.
In their first game of the tournament, the Demons had no problem with Independence. Washington won the contest 10-0.
Their second matchup was with the Cougars of Cascade. It was a tough out for the Demons as they fell 12-3.
On Saturday Washington took on No. 10 (Class 3A) Center Point-Urbana and Edgewood-Colesburg.
Washington defeated Center Point-Urbana 11-7 and ended the weekend with a tight loss to Edgewood-Colesburg 2-1.
After the slew of games, the Demons sit at 12-8.
Washington will be back in action on Monday in an SEC battle with Fairfield on the road.
