WASHINGTON — Washington girls basketball team came up short in a non-conference bout against Ottumwa on Monday night. The Demons started off the night with some impressive shooting from outside, but they couldn’t keep up the pace as Ottumwa won the battle, 48-29.
The opening quarter proved to be the Demons best scoring period of the night. Washington drilled four deep balls in the first frame, but still found itself down to Ottumwa 16-12 heading into the second.
Washington hung around in the second, but the Bulldogs defense made the difference. The Demons were held to just three points in the second frame, while the Bulldogs dropped in 13 of their own. That included an 8-0 run to the end quarter.
Heading into halftime, Washington trailed Ottumwa 29-15.
In the second half the narrative stayed much of the same as Washington could never get out in front.
The Bulldogs won the scoring battle in the third 11-6 and then both teams scored eight a piece in the final period.
Kendall Hinrichsen led the Demons with 11 points in the loss. Maci Williams and Addison Miller both finished with six. Jacey Berg and Lauren Hinrichsen each added three.
With the loss, Washington drops to 7-7. The Demons will be back in action on Friday at Mt. Pleasant.
