WASHINGTON — Washington volleyball took care of business in its final regular season home game on Tuesday night.
The Demons picked up yet another Southeast Conference sweep, this time downing the Chiefs of Keokuk 25-16, 25-14 and 25-17.
It took the Demons a bit to get going in the conference bout, but the Chiefs had no answer once the Demons grabbed the lead.
The Chiefs jumped out to a 5-3 advantage in the opening set, but that deficit was short-lived.
Washington followed with a 4-0 run to make it 7-5 and never looked back. In all, an ace from Layla Green and a kill by Sarah Berdo finished off a 11-3 run by the Demons, making it 14-8.
Keokuk never had an answer.
In set two, the Demons took an early lead and never gave it up.
However, Keokuk kept it close before another big run put Washington out of reach.
The Demons held onto just a two-point lead at 7-5, but Green hammered home a kill to kick start what would be a 16-7 run to push it to 23-12.
Set three was much closer between the two teams.
Washington looked as they were going to run away with it after a Leighton Messinger kill gave them a 9-5 advantage, but Keokuk came storming back with a 9-3 run to give itself the lead 14-12.
The Demons finished strong.
A pair of kills from Green gave the Demons back the lead at 15-14 and they never let the Chiefs get back into it.
Green, Messinger and Taylor Miksch all notched kills in a 5-0 run to make it 21-15. Washington closed it out with the final four points.
Leighton Messinger finished with 14 kills to lead the Demons. Layla Green followed with 12 kills.
Carys Miller finished with 34 assists.
Ellie Farmer led in digs with 18, Messinger ended with 10.
Green and Colbie Greiner each had two aces.
With the win, Washington’s moves to 4-1 in SEC play and 11-10 overall.
The Demons will be back in action on Tuesday when they head to Keokuk for the opening round of the Southeast Conference Tournament.
“For us, it’s about us going down and taking care of business,” Washington head coach Aaron Six said. “We need to play the volleyball that we’re capable of playing. It’s one of those things where no one’s going to change how we play as long as we play solid volleyball.”
