WASHINGTON — The latest win for the Washington cross-country teams came at their own home meet, as the Demons won both high school races at Washington Golf and Country Club on Tuesday evening.
The Washington boys beat out Southeast Conference rival Fort Madison by 13 points. The Demon girls clipped Marion by 4.
The Demon boy shad three runners in the Top-6 on the day. Micah Rees won yet another race individually, finishing in 15 minutes, 49.95 seconds. Tyler Alderton finished third, in 16:44.59, and Andrew Rees took sixth, in 17:12.03.
“I think we took it on pretty well,” said Alderton. “We all had the right mindset for the most part, and we attacked it.”
Alderton says the Demons haven’t been getting comfortable with the success.
“When you get down to this level, you're only asking for about 10 seconds to PR,” Alderton said. “That's kind of a downer to it, but you know you just have to keep training to be exactly where you want to be.”
Washington’s Lane Schrock finished in 16th place, crossing the tape in 18:13.70. Sawyer Tschantz was 20th, in 18:39.23. Andrew Shephard was 21st, in 18:46.90, and the seventh Washington runner across was Jace Sanders, who took 26th, in 18:58.90.
Mt. Pleasant took fourth place on the boys’ side. The Panthers scored 76 points and put two runners in the Top-10.
Ben Carthey was Mt. Pleasant’s top runner, taking fifth place, in 17:07.20. Jude Dykstra wasn’t far behind, taking ninth, in 17:28.96.
“I felt faster than that, but it's all right,” Dykstra said. “Those uphills are killer, but I did my best, so that's all that matters.”
Mt. Pleasant’s Locken Henderson took 13th place, in 17:55.46. Coleman Mowery and Jace Sanders finished 24th and 25th respectively. Gavin Slagel took 46th, and Drake Landau made it seven Panthers in the Top-50, with a 49th-place finish.
Fairfield’s Nate Konczal took 15th place, finishing in 18:03.76. Riley Perkins was 29th, in 19:15.51. Gabe Tejada finished 38th. John Miller took 39th. Ben Boatright, Andrew Myers and Clae Cass took 42nd, 43rd and 45th respectively.
Highland finished eighth overall. The Huskies’ top runners were Jackson Schneider, Chase Hickenbottom and Bayden Zywiec, who finished 83rd, 84th and 85th respectively.
WACO didn’t have enough boys to score as a team. The Warriors’ top runner was Keiran Luitjens, who finished in 36th.
On the girls’ side, the Demons needed every point they could muster to hold off Marion. It didn’t hurt to have Iris Dahl clocking into third place, at 20 minutes, 25.44 seconds.
Washington had all seven varsity runners finish in the Top-16. Emma Horak was ninth, in 21:43.91. Quincy Griffis took 10th, in 21:50.45. Angeline Anderson was 11th, in 21:57.91. Alyvia Anderson took 12th, in 21:59.21.
Kendall Hinrichsen slipped into the Top-15 with a 15th-place 22:21.51. Isabella Lujan wasn’t far behind her, taking 16th, in 22:24.65.
Fairfield took fifth place on the day, scoring 149 total points. Trojan senior Carley Seeley landed just outside the Top-5, with a sixth-place time of 20:55.81. Malena Bloomquist took 22nd, in 22:51.49.
“It's always fun to use the downhills,” Bloomquist said. “I just love flying down them. It's so much fun.”
Fairfield’s Caroline Van Pelt crossed in 30th. Bailey Belzer was 38th. Paige Bisgard took 53rd. Emerson Porter finished 62nd, and Tara Carter took 66th.
Mt. Pleasant didn’t have enough runners to score in the meet. The top Panther on the day was freshman Jayden Yoder, who took 37th place, in 24:31.89.
The next Panther across was Nelle Peterson, who finished 40th. Tatum Kane crossed in 57th. Hailey Parrott was 75th.
Highland’s Iosbel Murphy was the top runner for the Huskies, finishing 51st. WACO’s top runner on the day was Sarah Craun, who finished 64th.
In the middle school races, Washington dominated the boys’ race, putting three in the Top-10. Parker Tschantz finished first, Jack Shepherd finished second, and Teag Miller was eighth.
Highland’s Calvin Meller took seventh to give the Huskies one Top-10 finisher. Fairfield’s Aaron Wellnitz took ninth, and Mt. Pleasant’s Jalen Tolander nipped teammate Finn Kramer for 10th.
The Mt. Pleasant girls were champions on the middle school side, thanks in part to a first-place finish from Avery Fedler. Also finishing Top-10 for the Panther girls were Quintrie Lee, in fourth, Elodie Rawson, who took seventh, Josie Dykstra, who finished ninth, and Bella Dodds, who took 10th.
Other Top-10 finishers on the girls’ side in middle school included fifth place Macie Carter of WACO and sixth place Alex Jo Stewart, of Fairfield. Fairfields Kensley Fligg finished 11th.
