Washington sweeps, New London stays perfect
Demons’ high-scoring doubleheader and Tigers’ pair of wins highlight area baseball roundup

Demons sweep SEC slugfest
KEOKUK — There were runs a plenty at Joyce Park in Keokuk as Washington took two Southeast Conference road games, winning 17-10 and 16-9.
Game 1 was back-and-forth until the seventh inning. Washington stretched an 11-10 lead with a six-run top of the seventh, and the Chiefs were shut out in the bottom half.
Ethan Patterson went 4-for-6 with a double and two RBIs in Game 1. Wilx Witthoft was 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Lucas Kroll went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs, and Reece Mayer was 2-for-6 with a double and three batted in.
Ethan Zieglowsky, Kole Williams and Lucas Kroll all saw time on the mound in the win. Zieglowsky pitched two perfect frames, Williams gave up eight runs (seven earned) over 4⅔ innings, and Kroll came in for one out, but gave up one earned run.
In Game 2, Zieglowsky had a rare five-hit game, going 5-for-6 with an RBI. Kroll was 4-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs. Williams was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Williams had two RBIs, and Matt Wolf was 1-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.
Zieglowsky, Jacob Miller and Zeke Slagel all saw mound time in Game 2. Zieglowsky pitched four shutout innings.
Trojans lose baseball DH
The baseball field was alive with suspense during the opener as Nate Smithburg allowed just two hits over six innings to Fort Madison (9-2, 5-1) with six strikeouts, but three errors were the difference in a 2-1 loss. Fairfield (4-8, 2-4) had six hits in the opener but just two in a five-inning 13-3 second-game loss.
Rath’s strong start leads Mid-Prairie
CASCADE — Aidan Rath gave up just one hit over five innings to help will the Golden Hawks past Cascade. The Cougars scored a couple unearned off the Mid-Prairie starter but never led in a 6-4 Golden Hawk victory.
Keegan Gingerich went 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI in the win. Alex Bean was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
WMU loses heartbreaker
WINFIELD — Winfield-Mount Union held a 6-1 lead over Lone Tree in Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division play, but the Lions chipped away and eventually stole the game in the final inning.
Lone Tree battled back to slice the Wolves’ lead to 7-5 after five frames. The Lions scored three in the top of the seventh, and WMU couldn’t respond in the bottom half of the inning.
Pekin blanked by Mediapolis
PACKWOOD — Mediapolis scored in just two innings, but it was enough to run past Pekin in a North Division showdown. The Bulldogs scored six in the second and three in the sixth to beat Pekin 9-0.
The Panthers had just four hits in the loss. Cael Baker led the way, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.
Van Buren races to win
KEOSAUQUA — Van Buren County scored the first eight runs of an 8-6 South Division victory over Notre Dame, one that catapulted the Warriors to second in the South standings.
Ryan Wolf went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs to lead VBC. Treyton Bainbridge was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Ravens fly past Columbus
COLUMBUS — Hillcrest Academy cruised to an 18-0(5) North Division win over Columbus, keeping the Wildcats out of the winner’s column so far this season.
Hillcrest hurler Seth Our pitched a one-hit shutout, striking out seven batters over five innings. Luke Schrock was 3-for-5 with three RBIs. London Schrock went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs. Eli Ours was 1-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBIs.
Highland rally falls short
RIVERSIDE — Highland nearly rallied back from an 8-0 deficit against Central Lee, but came up just shy in a 9-8 loss.
The Huskies entered the seventh down 9-4 but scored four in their final at-bat to put a scare into the visiting Hawks.
Trevor McFarlane was 2-for-5 with three RBIs to lead the Huskies. Brenton Bonebrake went 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs.
New London fries Falcons
WEST BURLINGTON — The first-place Tigers stayed unbeaten in style, crushing West Burlington 16-0(4) on the road.
Josh Catala went 1-for-2 with a double, three RBIs and four runs scored. Tucker Gibbar went 2-for-4 with a triple, a double and three RBIs. Carter Allen and Brenden Richey each knocked in two runs.
Comets rally past Danville
Danville led 3-0 after the top of the fourth inning, but Cardinal scored two runs in the fourth, seven in the fifth and one in the sixth in a 10-4 victory.
Blaine Bryant was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI in the Cardinal victory. Tristan Cloke went 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Kaleb Figueroa and Morgan Rupe each knocked in two runs.
Josh Courtney and Corbin Humble split time evenly on the mound. Courtney gave up three runs (one earned), and Humble gave up one earned run.
Keota drops road game
EDDYVILLE — It was a wild first three innings as Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont erupted for nine runs in the second and Keota answered with eight in the top of the third, but the Rockets would score the next six in a 15-8 EBF win.
Keota’s Caden Clarahan went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in the loss. Cole Kindred was 1-for-1 with two RBIs.
Friday, June 11
Eagles bounce back at BGM
BROOKLYN — One day after a loss at EBF, Keota rallied from a 4-0 deficit to scoop up a 7-4 win at BGM.
Carson Sprouse earned the win on the mound, giving up just four unearned runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out six batters. Sam Sieren went 3-for-4 to lead the Eagles, and Brady Duwa knocked in a team-high two runs.
Tigers win 8th straight
KALONA — New London moved to 8-0 with a 14-4(6) win over Hillcrest Academy. The Tigers scored the first 10 runs of the game, including six in the third.
New London blasted four home runs in the win, two each from Josh Catala and Hecniel Rodriguez. The two led the Tigers with four RBIs apiece.
Brenden Richey and Seth Bailey split time on the mound. Bailey gave up all four Hillcrest runs but earned the win.
Hillcrest’s London Schrock finished the game 1-for-2 with a homer and two RBIs.
Wolves shut out at home
WINFIELD — Winfield-Mount Union couldn’t get anything going in an SEISC crossover game against Danville. The Bears shut the Wolves out, 12-0.
Warriors lose late lead
KEOSAUQUA — Van Buren County held a 9-6 lead going into the final inning against Lone Tree, but the Lions rallied back to win 11-10 and ruin a potential 3-0 home stand for the Warriors.
Lone Tree scored a game-high five runs in the seventh to take its first lead since the first inning. VBC could only answer with one of their own in its last offensive half inning.
Pekin stunned by 7th-inning rally
PACKWOOD — A three-run bottom of the sixth gave Pekin a 4-2 lead over Central Lee heading into the final inning of play, but the Hawks put up eight runs in the seventh in a 10-5 Central Lee win.
Levi Coleman was strong on the mound for Pekin, giving up just two earned runs on five hits and four walks over 5⅓ innings.
Mason Juhl was 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs to lead Pekin. Chandler Stull went 2-for-2 with a double. Brady Milliking and Chase Stansberry each knocked in a run.
Huskies heave Nikes
HIGHLAND — Highland sored at least one run in each of the first five innings, including four in the fifth, to blast Notre Dame 10-3.
Kaige Vonnahme was 4-for-4 with four singles and an RBI sin the win. Luke Miller went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Logan Bonebrake knocked two in and Chase Schultz finished a complete-game, giving up three earned runs on 10 hits and one walk, while striking out five.
