Washington volleyball finished off Southeast Conference regular season play in dominant fashion. The Demons took down Fort Madison 3-0 (25-10, 25-11, 25-13) on Tuesday to preserve a flawless regular season record against Southeast Conference opponents.
Washington (15-8, 5-0 SEC) has won its last six matches in a row, and has dropped just one set in the process. Fort Madison only briefly looked like it would be the second team since Sept. 15 to take a set, as the Demons found themselves up 13-11 in the third set Tuesday after not allowing more than 11 points in the first two.
Instead of continuing to trade blows with the Bloodhounds, Washington went on a 12-2 to close the match.
“One of the things we talked about in the locker room was set the tone early and often,” Six said. “I thought they did a great job with that in those first two sets and then finished really strong in that third set. So really outstanding match for the night and I thought the girls played extremely well.”
Fort Madison didn’t find nearly the same footing in the opening two sets as it did in the third. Washington put the Bloodhounds in a 7-0 hole in the second set and led by at least five points for the duration of the set.
The Bloodhounds fell behind 6-0 in the first set. Washington’s fifth and sixth points came after the Bloodhounds called an early timeout to make some adjustments. Washington responded in turn with two separate 6-0 runs and held an 18-point lead at one point.
“I thought we did a really good job passing the ball tonight, which allowed us to get a lot of in-system kills,” Six said. “We just did a great job with our setters mixing the balls up, hitting the hot hand and keeping that streak going.”
The Demons will now turn their attention to the pursuit of a second straight SEC Tournament title. They will start first portion of the round robin tournament at 5 p.m. Monday at Burlington High School.
