RIVERSIDE - Granted, there was no soccer last year, but athletes have long memories. Washington's boys soccer team had not forgotten a loss to Highland in 2019 and proved it Thursday.
The Demons ran around, through and over Highland on its home field for a 9-1 nonconference win. Fabian DeJesus scored a hat trick for the Demons while Zac Stout and Cole Anderson each found the back of the net twice.
'The Demons played a stellar game as a team,” head coach Sally Hart said. 'It's what every coach wants to see to start the season.”
It took less than 6 minutes for the Demons to score, and they did it with experience from a senior and enthusiasm from a freshman.
Stout, a senior, buried the ball in the net at the 34 minute, 24 second mark. With 28:23 until half, Emanuel Raymundo, a freshman, made it 2-0.
It remained 2-0 until 8 minutes after the halftime break when Julian Marcelino upped the score to 3-0.
Two more goals came in quick succession for the Demons when DeJesus netted the orb with 27 minutes to go, then with 25 minutes left, it was Stout again.
Highland finally found the net with 13 minutes to go after Washington had switched goal keepers at the 15-minute mark.
DeJesus hit his second goal for a 6-1 lead with 11 minutes to go and a minute later Demon teammate Cole Anderson scored. DeJesus notched the hat trick with a minute remaining and Anderson scored again for the final notch in the net and the 9-1 win.
'The team passed throughout the field and controlled the pace of the match,” Hart said. 'This is a great way to return to the field after nearly two years away. Coach Grunewaldt and I are excited to see what this team does this season.”
