DAVENPORT — A historic 2024 Washington volleyball season came to an end on Thursday night, at the hands of sixth-ranked Davenport Assumption.
The Knights were too much for the visiting Demons, who hung tough in the first game, but couldn’t win any sets, falling 25-20, 25-12 and 25-15.
“I thought we played well at times, but they just played better than us,” said Demon head coach Aaron Six. “You're going to face that at some point in the season, where you're going to come across a team that is better than you.”
There weren’t many teams better than the Demons this year in Southeast Iowa. Washington finished the season 18-16 overall, and went 9-1 in Southeast Conference games to win the school’s first SEC title ever.
“This group of seniors has brought the level of play up in the years since we've been together,” Six said. “Our overall quality of volleyball has improved. There's a lot of positives to bring out of where we're at.”
One of those seniors was Ella Greiner, who co-led the team in kills, with five. Junior Leighton Messinger had five kills as well. Messinger led the team with 12 digs, and Lauren Hinrichsen dished out 13 assists.
Seniors who saw the floor in their last game in a Demon uniform were Greiner, Hinrichsen, Ruby Witthoft, Bella Salazar, and Maya Murphy.
