Washington, WACO, Columbus/WMU wrestling pick up wins

WASHINGTON -- The Demon wrestling team played host to Columbus/WMU, WACO, and Fort Madison on Thursday, Jan. 6.

Washington, Columbus/WMU and WACO all went 1-2 in the meet, with Fort Madison running the table 3-0.

The Demons picked up a win over WACO, 42-39, before losing a tight race against Columbus/WMU, 36-30, and Fort Madison, 52-18.

“You know, it kind of looked like we came off the break,” Washington head coach Brent Van Weelden said. “There’s a lot of stuff going on over break where kids are out of town. We knew that was going on, that’s to be expected. I think the kids that were there the whole time wrestled extremely well.”

WACO’s one victory came over Columbus/WMU 37-33. Along with the loss to Washington, the Warriors also fell to Fort Madison 49-30.

“Overall, I was happy with the way we wrestled,” WACO head coach Seth Pugh said. “There are definitely some positions we need to improve on but I thought our effort was really good. We were ready to see some new competition coming off of Christmas break so it was nice to compete against some bigger schools from outside of our conference.”

Columbus picked up the win over Washington, while falling to Columbus and Fort Madison, 57-21.
