Washington wins boys race at Hillcrest
Rees takes first overall to lead Demons

Andrew Rees has made it back-to-back races with a win Monday. The standout Washington senior took first place in the boys race at the Hillcrest Academy Invitational. It’s his second first place finish after he also won Washington’s home meet on Sept. 30.
Rees finished with a time of 17:10.69, over 30 seconds faster than the second place finisher, Louisa-Muscatine’s Hayden Riggan. It also led a strong Washington team performance that saw the Demons narrowly capture the team title.
Washington finished tied on 53 points with Louisa-Muscatine, but won the tiebreaker, which is determined by the performance of the sixth-best runner after the typical top five finishers who factor into scoring. Fletcher Brower finished sixth for Washington and 26th overall at 19:45.28, just ahead of Louisa-Muscatine’s sixth-best performer, Cooper Leopard, which gave the team title to the Demons.
Jack Shepherd finished third overall and second for Washington at 18:00.35. Ethan Hotchkiss came sixth overall at 18:21.62. Teag Miller placed 21st at 19:15.43 and Parker Tschantz finished one spot behind at 19:32.25.
Fairfield also competed in the boys race and came sixth out of eight teams with 170 points. Clae Cass was the Trojans best runner at 19:54.51.
After Washington and Louisa-Muscatine, West Liberty (75 points) finished third, followed by Regina Catholic (76) and English Valleys (157). Hillcrest (180) and HLV/TC (182) finished behind Fairfield in seventh and eighth place, respectively.
The Washington girls team came fourth in team scoring Monday with 82 points. Kora Miller was the Demons best runner and earned a seventh place finish at 21:54.61. Emma Horak finished eighth at 22:03.33. Angeline Anderson finished 14th at 22:51.49.
English Valleys (42 points) took home the girls team title. North Mahaska (67) finished second and Louisa-Muscatine (74) was third. Fairfield (103) and Regina Catholic (114) finished behind Washington in fifth and sixth place. Alex Jo Steward was the best runner for the Trojans in 16th place at 22:57.75.
