WASHINGTON — Washington girls basketball went down to the wire with Muscatine in the pairs season opening ballgame on Tuesday night.
The Demons held off a late comeback by the Muskies to force overtime and take the narrow win 55-52.
Washington looked like it was going to run away with it early. The Demons built a 17-6 lead by the end of the first quarter and went up by as much as 17 in the first half.
However, the Muskies were quick to answer, cutting the Demon lead to nine, 29-20, by the half. Muscatine then pulled within five before the fourth.
They didn’t stop there, as the Muskies stole the lead and took a four point advantage with just 30 seconds remaining.
Washington faced a tough task, down three starters due to fouling out, but they rose to the occasion.
Addison Miller hit two free throws and hit a clutch layin off a Muscatine turnover to pull the game even at 48-48 with just 12 seconds remaining.
In overtime, Emma Horak connected on what was Washington’s lone bucket in the extra period. Miller followed with some clutch shots from the foul line to hold off Muscatine.
Kendall Hinrichsen and Miller both finished with 16 points. Adalyn Long ended with nine points and Lauren Hinrichsen followed with seven.
Washington is now 1-0 and will take on Albia on Tuesday.
