WASHINGTON — The Washington girls soccer team continues to perform well in the early season, picking up its third straight win.
The Demons defeated Oskaloosa 4-1 to stay undefeated, improving to 3-0.
Washington never really had a problem with the Indians, while controlling the majority of possession with intensity on both ends.
“I think we have a fair number of really talented players that can move the ball and push forward,” Washington head coach Steven Caulk said. “They can connect with our attacking players. We do a really good job of that.”
Washington got on the board early and never let up.
Following an early goal by Giselle Marcelino, Washington continued to create chances, but struggled to capitalize.
It wasn’t until the just under the 7:00 minute mark that Washington scored its second goal with a power shot by Greta Rothe that found the bottom right corner.
Not long after Rothe’s goal, Marcelino got herself a second goal with a shot that deflected off an Oskaloosa defender and hit the back of the net, making it a 3-0 ballgame.
Rothe said the Demons success is thanks to the camaraderie between the teammates.
“The biggest thing for us is our mind sent at the beginning of the game,” Rothe said. “We play together and we go in with the intensity that we want to win. We go out and play for each other. No matter what happens, we stick together.”
With the three goal lead coming out of halftime, Washington coasted in the second half.
Rothe grabbed her second goal of the game early in the half, with 31:29 to go giving the Demons a 4-0 lead.
“I just want to win,” Rothe said. “I just love the sport so much and just getting to do what I love to do with some of my really great friends is just what makes it so fun. It’s just easy going. I have confidence and if I do what I know I can, it will all work out.”
For the next 30 minutes, Washington continued to win the possession battle, and continued to apply pressure until the end.
Oskaloosa was able to avoid the shutout, scoring a goal with 41 seconds on the clock.
Washington will return to action on Thursday away from home against Mt. Pleasant.
