Washington, WMU boys, Fairfield girls win Ekstrand Relays

WAYLAND — WACO High School’s 2021 Ekstrand Relays were predictably packed with Union area coverage teams, and that meant a boatload of wins for the area’s schools.
The Washington and Winfield-Mount Union boys enjoyed team wins. The Demons won the Class A meet by more than 60 points, scoring 177 on the day. WMU won the Class B boys meet with an even 100.
Fairfield’s girls team rolled through the Class A standings, scoring 172 points to beat second-place Keokuk by 72.
The Washington boys won nine events on the day, including every single individual track race. The Demons were led by triple-winner Lance Sobaski, who took the 800-meter run, the 1600 and the 3200.
Jacob Miller won two events for the Demons, taking the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Elijah Morris won the 400-meter dash.
The Demons won three of the four field events. Ethan Patterson won the high jump, Brayden Hartman took the shot put, and Reece Mayer won the discus.
Fairfield’s boys won two events, both relays. The 4x800 team of Ben Boatright, Brady McWhirter, Alex Forrest and Gavin VanVee took home first place, as did the distance medley crew of Landen Schafer, Aiden Lyons, River Patterson and Kevin Kretz.
In Class B, New London had the most wins, netting four. Carter Allen won the discus and shot put competitions. Josh Bailey took the 200-meter dash, and Seth Bailey won the 1600.
Highland won three events. Conner Grinstead won the 100-meter dash. The 4x100 team of Kadin Jepson, Taylor Day, Tyler Thompson and Conner Grinstead took the top spot, as did the 4x200 team of Jepsen, Brenton Bonebrake, Thompson and Grinstead.
WMU won two events. The 4x400 quartet of Talen Newton, Cam Buffington, Caleb Giese and Dane Sweezer crossed in first, and Cam Buffington won the long jump.
The hosting WACO boys won two events. Braden Spain won the 400-meter dash, and Mason Miller took the high jump.
On the girls’ side, Fairfield matched the Washington boys by taking nine events on the day. This included a double win by Malena Bloomquist, who swept the long distance events with wins in the 1500-meter run and the 3000.
Maddie Jones crossed first in the 800-meter run to give the Trojans another individual track win. Kelsey Pacha won the 400-meter hurdles to tack on one more.
The Trojan girls were electric in the relays. The 4x100 squad of Kiya Robertson, Maya Lane, Coty Engle and Danielle Breen won. The Trojan quartet of Robertson, Lyon, Engle and Lane won the 4x200. The 4x400 team of Anna Dunlap, Allison Brynley, Savannah Hollander and Jones took first.
Fairfield’s 4x800 team of Carley Seeley, Jones, Addison Ferrel and Hollander crossed first, as did the sprint medley squad of Robertson, Engle, Dunlap and Lyon.
The Washington girls won one event. Molly Klinzman won the 400-meter dash.
In Class B, the hosting WACO girls won three events. Avery Waterhouse won the 3000. Zoey Dennler won the 400-meter hurdles, and the shuttle hurdle squad of Dennler, Maggie Rinner, Katie Leichty and Molly McLaughlin took first as well.
Highland took three girls events. MacKenzie McFarland won the 100-meter dash. The 4x200 team of Alyssa Clarke, Sarah Burton, Katelyn Waters and McFarland took first, and the 4x400 team of McFarland, Burton, Clarke and Taylor Sublette gave the Huskies another victory.
The WMU girls pulled out one win on the day, and it came in the shot put, where Jobey Malone emerged victorious.
