After starting out with a pair of wins over Keokuk, the Washington wrestling teams fell short in their second Southeast Conference dual. The Demon boys and girls teams each dropped a match to Ft. Madison on Thursday.
Washington’s girls team was defeated 60-12 by the Bloodhounds, who won the 42 of their points from forfeits. The boys team fell 48-34 to Ft. Madison, but rebounded in its second match of a triangular with a 47-26 win over Mediapolis.
Six Washington boys wrestlers recorded wins in the Demons’ defeat to the Bloodhounds. Joseph Schreiber (113 pounds), Caden Greiner (144), Jace Kinzenbaw (157), Mark Chenoweth (175) and Rudy Wolfe (285) all pinned their opponents. Blaine Rees (190) won by major decision.
“We were a little sluggish to get into that (Ft. Madison match),” Washington boys coach Joel Keller said. “It’s been since December since we’ve wrestled. So, it was our first time back up on the mat. We were able to get into it towards the end of it and start scoring some points as individuals and as a team and brought the team score back.”
Greiner, Kinzenbaw and Rees each won their second matches of the night against Mediapolis. Rees pinned Mepo’s Peyton Johnson in 5:16 and Greiner won by techincal fall.
Kinzenbaw delivered a standout performance of the night for the boys team. After taking down Ft. Madison’s Eric Cornelis, the freshman pinned Mason Johnson of Mediapolis in 1:29. Johnson was a Class 2A state qualifier at 150 pounds last season.
“We’re carrying the same swagger on and off the mat,” Keller said. “We’ve got at a lot of young guys (but) we’re not wrestling like young guys anymore. We’re starting to wrestle like a team and we’re a lot more mature.”
Washington followed up the triangular with a 13th place finish at the Bobcat Jerry Eckenrod Invitational on Saturday. The Demons scored 33 points as a team. Greiner had the best individual performance with a fourth place finish in the 144-pound bracket.
Though it didn’t record a team victory, the Washington girls team managed to win three of the five non-forfeited matches against Ft. Madison. Cherry Lindsey (110) and Nora Stoutner (120) recorded pins. Colbie Greiner (155) won by injury default.
“There was another match there we were right there neck-and-neck until the end,” Washington assistant coach Kyle Wellington said. “So, potentially could have won four of the five and our girls really fought hard. So that’s something to be proud of and I’m happy with the effort.”
Stoutner pinned her opponent in just 41 seconds. Lindsey and Greiner each recorded the first wins of their wrestling careers, having picked up the sport this season.
“They both since they came in have got extra workouts in whether its going and working out at the youth program, or coming in and doing individual (workouts), one-on-ones,” Wellington said. “And that extra work is paying off because they’re out there and they look like they know what they’re doing. So that’s pretty impressive after a just a few weeks of practice.”
Greiner and Lindsey each added two more wins over the weekend as the girls team competed in the North Mahaska Invitational. Junior Ryha Wellington was the top individual for the Demons with a second place finish in the 145-pound bracket.
