DES MOINES — It was a heck of the season for two of the Union area’s best wrestling seniors.
Washington’s Aaron Boone and New London’s Gage Burden have both cemented themselves as some of the best to do it in the area.
Boone closes out his high school wrestling career with a record of 50-4 and a third-place finish in Class 2A’s 132 pound weight class. Meanwhile, Burden notches his first career spot-on the podium, taking sixth in Class 1A’s 138 pound and finishing with a 43-9 record.
There was just one blemish on Boone’s run through the tournament this season. The senior finished 5-1 in the tournament.
After a bye to start the championships, Boone pinned Woodward-Granger’s Tanner Paustian in 2:18.
But in the quarterfinals, he was defeated by NH/TV’s Carter Cajthaml 10-6 decision, knocking him into the consolation bracket.
Following the loss, Boone ran the table. He picked up four straight wins including a 9-2 decision over Charlie Showalter of Hampton-Dumont-CAL, a 15-0 tech fall over Mason Avila of Decorah, a pin over Steele Diercks of Davenport Assumption and finally a 4-1 decision over Kaiden Parker of Oskaloosa in the third place match.
“It feels good, I wasn’t able to get the state title, but me and my coaches talked after the loss and I was able to get the next best thing which was third,” Boone said. “It feels really good right now.”
Boone punched his ticket to the state tournament for three straight years.
As for Burden, he finished the tournament with a record of 4-3. The Tigers notched back-to-back wins to start the tournament, a 10-0 major decision over Gavin Kishman of MFL MarMac and then a 11-6 decision win over Landon Price of Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire.
Burden’s first loss came against Dustin Van Oort of West Sioux, Hawarden in the quarterfinals, a 14-4 major decision.
Following the loss, he bounced back with back-to-back wins, a 9-0 major decision over Chance Christensen of Riceville and a 6-0 decision over Cohen Wolford of Wapello.
It was a tough end to the championship weekend though as Aidan Timm pinned Burden in the consolation semifinals and then Van Oort got the better of him again in a down to the wire 5th place match by sudden victory 9-6.
“I’m happy I got my end goal of placing, but that last match stung a little,” Burden said. “Could have had it in overtime, but I’m happy that I got my goal. It’s really all I could ask for.”
In all, Burden made it to Well Fargo four times.
