Juniors Garrett Covington and Alex Coker were recently selected to the Class 3A all-state second team by IowaPreps/Rivals.com after leading Washington to the second round of the playoffs.
Covington, an inside linebacker, led a swarming Demon defense that allowed just 12.5 points and 186 yards per game with 119 total tackles. The physical junior, who was also selected to the Iowa Newspaper Association?s all-state second team, also made 11 tackles for a loss, including two quarterback sacks, for a Washington squad that finished a surprising 7-4.
Coker, a cornerback, was another key player in Washington?s stingy defense. Not only did he snatch the ball from a Winterset receiver?s hands and return it 42 yards for a touchdown in Washington?s second-round playoff game, but he also returned an interception 62 yards for a score at Keokuk earlier in the year. Coker made 53 tackles and intercepted a pair of passes this fall.
