DES MOINES — Washington sophomore Greyson Hartman and Mid-Prairie senior Burke Berry proved that their a couple of the top throwers in the state with podium finishes at the 2025 Iowa Girls and Boys State Track and Field Championships last week.
Hartman and Berry both walked away with third-place finishes in their respective events.
Hartman entered the 3A discus on Thursday with the fourth best throw in the class. It didn’t take Hartman long to prove that he deserved to be on the podium.
On his first throw, Hartman tossed the discus 169-08. That was his top throw of the day and was good enough for the bronze.
“I came in and threw pretty well,” Hartman said. “I mean I PR’ last week and I couldn’t PR today, but I still threw well enough to get through. That felt really good. I just have to keep working and keep working. Keep getting better. That’s all you can do.”
Landon Prince of Clear Creek Amana was the top medalist with a throw of 181-10.
Hartman also finished just off the podium in the shot put. He ended with a throw of 55-04.75 for fourth overall in the shot.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity, and grateful for the people who came out and supported me,” Hartman said after the shot put. “But I’m not happy with the results. This won’t happen again. I’ll be back next year.”
Berry had a little bit of drama in his trek for third. Berry’s first throw of 52-03.75 put him in sixth all the way until his final throw.
Following back-to-back fouls, Berry bounced back with a throw of 54-04.00 to get on the podium.
Fellow shot teammate Tommy Miller finished 11th in the event with a throw of 50-11.00.
In other boys throwing results, Mid-Prairie’s Kaden Kos finished 13th in the discus with a throw of 143-11.
