WASHINGTON — Tuesday was a monumental day for Washington standout runner Micah Rees.
The Demon senior not only solidified his college academic decision, but also signed his national letter of intent to run for the University of Northern Iowa, meaning Washington wont be the last time fans are seeing Rees compete.
“I feel really relieved,” Rees said. “I thought this process would be a lot longer, but I already know where I’m going. I feel like I made the best choice possible. It check all the boxes. I’m so excited to continue at UNI.”
Rees says he’s excited to compete for the Panthers.
“I have a sister that goes there right now,” Rees said. “I know the campus. I love the size and I love the team. I ran with them and spent some time with them. I love the coach. She’s very excited to have me and that makes me very excited. She cares and I care.”
What a career it’s been for Rees and he’s only gotten better through four years of running.
This latest cross-country season was his best to date.
Rees not only helped the Washington boys cross-country team reach its first ever top five finish at the 3A state meet, placing fifth, but cemented himself as one of the top runners in the state with a fourth overall finish individually.
That was Rees’ second Top-15 finish ever and it’s nine spots better than his state run a year ago, in which he placed 13th.
Cross-Country isn’t the only sport that Rees has shown his talents in. He’s also been a stellar athlete on the track.
Last season, Rees featured in three events for the Demons at the Iowa High School Track and Field Championships in Des Moines.
Two of those events were individual and one a relay. Rees showed out, notching personal records in his pair of individual events. Those were the 1600-meter in which he placed 18th and the 3200-meter where he finished 10th. He will be looking to run it back this spring.
The 4x800 team returns a pair as well, featuring teammates Logan McDole and brother Andrew Rees. They placed 22nd in the event.
While Rees will be focusing on his collegiate career at UNI after his high school year is compete, he knows he’s not quite done yet as track season awaits.
For Rees, being a Washington Demons has helped him be the best he can be.
“The best thing about being a Demon is the amazing team aspect,” Rees said. “Everyone has been so supportive, loving and encouraging. I couldn’t have done it without them and the coaches pushing me. They saw what was in me and what I was capable of. I never imagined I would be here, but I’m very blessed and thankful to be here.”
