WASHINGTON — Washington’s tack and field star Elijah Morris has made his college decision.
The Demon senior signed his national letter of intent on Tuesday morning in front of family, friends and coaches to run track for the University of Iowa.
“I’m really excited to be able to continue competing at the next level,” Morris said. “It’s going to be great to be surrounded by more great teammates. There’s such a great culture here (Washington) and it’s been such a blessing to be surrounded by people who take this sport seriously. I’m excited to continue that.”
Morris, who is a two-time Class 3A 400-meter champion, has been nothing short of amazing this season.
The senior finished second in the event at the Drake Relays against competition from around the entire state.
He currently holds the top time in Class 3A at 48.49 and that ranks him third across all classes.
In the next couple of weeks, Morris will look to become a three timer in the event. For Morris, this week is about being smart.
“I just need to be smart and take care of my body,” he said. “I wanna qualify in what I know I can qualify in. I got more than what people think I got so I’m excited to show that at state.”
The 400-meter is just the tip of the iceberg of where Morris shines.
He also holds the fasted 200-meter time in the class at 21.57. It’s the second fastest time across all four classes.
In the 100-meter, Morris ranks third in Class 3A, clocking a time of 10.79. That ranks eighth in the entire state.
Morris is also apart of 4x200 and 4x400 squads that are 15th and 17th in the class.
“I think the best part of the season has been being able to be there for my team,” Morris said. “I haven’t been able to compete much this season, but still getting to see my teammates succeed and push boundaries is great.”
Morris and the Demons had a great showing at last years state tournament meet. This time around they will look to do the same and better.
