WASHINGTON — Washington boys basketball closed its regular season on Thursday night with a home stand against Solon.
The Demons outscored the No. 5 Spartans in two of four quarters, but Solon did too much damage between the other two frames to win it 70-54.
Solon took control early on, building a 19-6 lead through the first quarter.
Washington kept battling. The Demons rallied together through the second, bringing it back to within six, 32-26, before halftime. The Demons outscored the Spartans 20-13 in the period.
Despite narrowing the gap, the third frame made all the difference as Solon went on to outscore Washington 20-8 in the quarter to make it 52-34 heading into the fourth.
The Demons were never able to make up the difference. Washington matched its highest scoring total of the night in the fourth, dropping in 20, but Solon nearly matched it with 18.
The loss marks the Demons eighth straight. Washington moves to 6-14. The Demons will take on Clear Creek-Amana in the Class 3A Substate 5 quarterfinals on Monday.
