Washington’s Rothe, Mid-Prairie’s Jones make All-State soccer teams

The Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association (IAHSSCA) and Iowa Girls Coaches Association (IGCA) released its All-State soccer teams earlier this month, and the Union area is home to a couple of All-Staters in Class 1A.

Greta Rothe was named to two All-State teams. The Washington girls’ senior-leader was named an honorable mention on the IAHSSCA list, and was named to the second team by the IGCA.

Rothe scored 23 goals for the Demons this year in 17 starts. She also dished out two assists, giving her 48 points on the season.

Rothe was the main culprit for the Washington girls on penalty kicks. Rothe took four penalties this season, and made three of them.

Rothe’s leadership helped the Demon girls finish in a tie for third place in the Southeast Conference standings. Washington went 10-7 overall and 5-5 in conference play.

Mid-Prairie’s Justice Jones was one of the best goalkeepers in the Class 1A boys’ ranks. That was a big reason the Golden Hawks started the 2022 season on a nine-game winning streak.

Over the first nine games, Jones gave up just four goals. He let in just 15 all season, and saved 59, giving him a save percentage of 79.7 percent.

Jones and the Golden Hawks went 11-4 on the season. They finished fourth in the River Valley Conference, going 4-3.
