Washington head baseball coach Nathan Miller said he saw a lot of good things from his team in its 13-0 non-conference win at Danville on Wednesday night.
?We had a lot of positives last night,? Miller said. ?We just played solid.?
The Demons (9-8) scored early and often against the Bears. Washington scored four runs in the top of the first inning, added a run in the third, scored two in the fourth and piled on six in the sixth to end the game early after six innings.
Washington, which has struggled at the plate at times this season, had nine hits in the game. Junior Jacob Green went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs to lead the Demons, and junior Walker Breard went 2-for-3 with a solo home run. Eighth-grader Dakota Kron went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while senior Austin Witt and junior Elijah Wood both added hits. Junior Tanner Knupp also drew a pair of bases-loaded walks.
?We?re looking at improving our approach at the plate, and we were able to do that,? Miller said.
Meanwhile, Washington pitchers Drake Brezina and Michael Gier, a pair of eighth-graders, combined to throw six shutout innings.
?We pitched really well and played really well,? Miller said. ?Drake and Michael allowed three hits in the game and we played solid defense.?
Brezina started and got his second career varsity win. He allowed just one hit in 3 1/3 innings, striking out three batters and walking four. Gier threw the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing just two hits. He struck out one batter and did not issue a walk.
Miller said it was encouraging to see the two young pitchers have some success.
?Having the opportunity to get these young kids some innings is not only going to help them out, but also help us out as a team,? Miller said. ?And not only this year, but for future years.?
The Demons, who have now won three straight, will take a little bit of momentum into tonight?s doubleheader at Southeast Conference rival Mt. Pleasant, which will begin at 5:30 p.m.
