Mid-Prairie took a 26-6 lead early in the second quarter of Monday?s junior varsity football game at West Burlington-Notre Dame, but the Nikes responded with 28 unanswered points to win 34-26 in overtime.
Sophomore Austin Slabaugh returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown and scored touchdown runs of 40 and 2 yards in the first quarter, and the Golden Hawks led 19-6 after one period. Freshman quarterback Ryan Cortum threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Jacob Kukuzke in the second quarter that put Mid-Prairie up 26-6. But the Nikes scored before halftime and then added 14 points in the third quarter to tie the game before winning in overtime.
Slabaugh rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries. Cortum was 4-for-5 passing for 105 yards and a score. Kukuzke caught a pair of passes for 74 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore Trent Fisher made an 18-yard reception, and sophomore Colin Weber had a 13-yard catch.
Freshman Cameron Tolander made 13 tackles to lead the Golden Hawk defense, and freshman Nolan Faselt made seven stops. Freshmen Jacob Adrian and Karson Duwa both made six tackles. Weber intercepted a pass.
The Mid-Prairie junior varsity football team will travel to Columbus next Monday to take on the Wildcats at 6:30 p.m.
