It was a two for Tuesday in Wellman. Two things happened at Mid-Prairie High School that have been very rare simultaneous occurrences this spring ? a track meet being conducted while the sun was out.
Seventeen boys team took advantage of those happenings at the Hawk Co-Ed Relays. Mount Pleasant ran away with the team title, scoring 148 points to the hosts? second-place total of 83. Washington was sixth with 31 points. Columbus tied West Branch for 12th with 11 points. Highland scored four for 16th and Iowa Mennonite School was 17th.
Floyd Evans helped the Golden Hawks defend their track with his win in the 1600 in a time of 4 minutes, 34.94 seconds.
Mid-Prairie won both the distance medley and the sprint medley. Josh Slaubaugh, Peyton Miller, Grant Boyse and Cary Schaefer won the sprint in 1:37.44. Slaubaugh, Boyse, Schaefer and Marshal teets won the distance in 3:42.0.
Washington?s best finish in the meet was the sprint medley, taking second with a time of 1:38.62. Cade Hennigan, Tanner Murphy, Sawyer Whisler and Ethan Hunt were the members of that team.
?I was impressed with our sprint medley because it?s just the second time this year they ran it,? Washington head coach Steve Roth said. ?I was impressed with Ethan Hunt?s time in that because his split time was really good. Then he was able to come back and run a great time in the 400 lows. He had a good night. That was probably the highlight because other than that we had some handoff problems and some concentration problems. We will correct them. It?s not early in the year anymore. We only have three or four meets left.?
Hunt finished third in the 400 low hurdles with a time of 58.48.
The best finish for Columbus was third from Tommy Pretz in the long jump at 19 feet, 10.75 inches and Abel Mena in the 400 hurdles as his time of 59.45 was fourth.
Highland?s best finish was Zack Lasek?s toss of 131 feet, 7 inches in the discus for fourth place.
