FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield citywide golf tournament turned into a battle of the eras in the final weekend of July, as 21-year old Max Weaton edged out 42-year old Nathan Elseman in a 47-hole marathon.
The tournament, which is scheduled for 45 holes, took place at both the Fairfield Golf and Country Club and the Walton Club. After 45 holes, both Weaton and Elseman were knotted up at 175.
Elseman had battled all the way back from nine shots down with nine holes left, breaking the course record for long nine in competition with a seven-under-par 28 to force a playoff.
Despite the comeback, Weaton, who many readers know from his decorated high school athletics career, outdueled Elseman on the second playoff hole.
“They’ve been working with him up there at Iowa State,” Elseman said of Weaton. “He’s just a really consistent golfer.”
Davis Lowenberg was hot on Weaton’s trail up until the final nine holes, even sitting seven spots ahead of Elseman with nine holes left. He finished third.
Also winning a trophy were the women’s two-gal best shot duo of Desiree Regnier and Suzan Booth.
Listed below are other significant results from Fairfield’s citywide tournament.
