What an honor it is to play in the Iowa Shrine Bowl.
Three Union area athletes got the opportunity to participate in the annual All-Star Classic.
The trio being Max Weaton of Fairfield, Simeon Reichenbach of WACO and Brayden Hartman of Washington.
All three played for the South team.
Since 1972, the Iowa Shrine Bowl has recognized senior athletes and coaches across the state.
Funds raised benefit Shriner’s Hospitals for Children with the goal of providing the best pediatric care regardless of the families’ ability to pay.
The Shriners Children’s Twin Cities also partners with Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines to provide orthopedic care to children in Central Iowa.
Thus far, the Iowa Shrine Bowl has raised over $3.8 million dollars.
Services include orthopedic, fractures, hip dysplasia, cerebral palsy, burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate care.
In this year’s game, the North team trailed 7-0 at halftime, but went on to score 23 unanswered points to take a commanding 23-7 lead into the fourth quarter.
The South answered back with touchdown and a two-point conversion to make it 23-15.
After a key defensive stop, the South got a shot at tying the game, but the North sealed it with a defensive touchdown, 29-15.
Both players and cheerleaders from around Iowa attended a camp days prior to the game. During this time, the kids get an opportunity to build friendships, while learning of the impact they can have for children that may need medical services.
The week closes with a honors banquet to celebrate the participants and their families, followed by a parade on Saturday morning before the games kick off.
