It was a good Friday for a few area football teams, as one kept its playoff hopes alive.
Sigourney-Keota?s win has them as the only area team able to clinch an automatic playoff berth, with a victory on Friday, but they will have to do so against No. 10 ranked Wilton.
In other action, Highland and Mid-Prairie earned victories in Week 8, as they prepare for their final week of the regular season.
Sigourney-Keota 40 ? Wapello 12
The Cobras won their fourth-straight contest, defeating the Indians, and now sit at 7-1 on the season.
The rushing game was dominant once again for Sigourney-Keota, as three athletes picked up at least 100 yards rushing, led by Carson Crawford?s 209 yards on the ground.
Crawford put in a touchdown, while Avery Moore (19 rushes, 163 yards) and Luke Greiner (8 rushes, 115 yards) each found the end zone twice in the contest.
Greiner also threw for a touchdown, finding Jack Eakins for a 16-yard score.
Defensively, Alec Schuster led the team with 8. 5 tackles, with 1.5 tackles for a loss and a sack on the night, while Crawford had six tackles (2.5 tackles for a loss, one sack).
The Cobras will prepare for their biggest game of the season on Friday when Wilton comes to town, as both teams sit at 7-1, each with losses to Regina on their schedule.
The winner will claim the second spot in the district, earning an automatic berth in the postseason, while the other will have to await their fate and hope for a wild-card spot.
The contest is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Highland 28 ? Louisa-Muscatine 0
The Huskies secured a winning season on Friday night, shutting out Louisa-Muscatine 28-0, matching the score they posted last week in a victory.
With a 5-3 record, the Huskies are on the outside looking in for the postseason, but are guaranteed to finish the season above .500.
Highland took an early lead with a Trey Lasek touchdown run in the first quarter, and the sophomore added a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter, coming on a 2-yard run and a 15-yard pass from senior quarterback Jake Wood.
Wood also found Trent Lasek in the third quarter, as the Huskies dominated the Falcons.
Trey Lasek finished the game with 63 rushing yards, 29 receiving yards and three total touchdowns, while Wood put up more than 200 yards of passing offense and a pair of touchdowns.
Highland?s biggest statistical victory came in the turnover battle, as L-M gave up the ball four times, and Highland never lost possession.
Trey Lasek was responsible for picking up three of those turnovers, with two interceptions and a fumble recovery, and Chase Rath notching an interception.
The Huskies will wrap up their season at home against Wapello. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Mid-Prairie 49 ? Anamosa 7
The Golden Hawks got back to .500 on Friday night, winning their second-straight contest, 49-7, over Anamosa.
The Golden Hawks stuck with their running game on Friday night, and it worked out, with Keaton Duwa notching a team-best 164 yards and a pair of scores, and senior Ricky Vargas putting up 141 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
Terrhyn Jacoby made the most of his four carries, notching 83 yards on the ground, while Justin Schwartz picked up the other rushing score for Mid-Prairie.
Defensively, Duncan McCain was the team leader in tackles, with 7.5 on the night, while Karson Gingerich picked up 6.5 tackles.
Jason Tew led the team with a pair of tackles for a loss, while recording the team?s only sack.
Vargas notched an interception in the game, while Duwa and Jared Miller recovered fumbles for the Golden Hawks.
Mid-Prairie will wrap up its season at Mediapolis on Friday night, as the Golden Hawks look to finish above .500 on the season.
Easton Valley 98 ? WACO 38
A first-quarter explosion from Easton Valley put WACO into a large hole they were unable to climb out of.
Easton Valley jumped out to a 46-13 lead after the first quarter, thanks to six touchdowns, five of which came from the same player.
That led to a 98-spot being put up on the night, and WACO falling to 3-5 in their first season of 8-man football.
The Warriors got strong nights from Gabe Black and Colton Horak, as they accounted for the majority of the scoring in the game.
Black rushed for a team-high 49 yards and a score, but much of the damage WACO did came through the aerial game, with Wyatt Harbison putting up 200 yards of passing and three touchdowns.
Horak was on the receiving end of all three of those touchdown strikes, accumulating 188 yards receiving on the night, with Horak also claiming a touchdown pass of his own, finding Black for a 68-yard touchdown.
The Warriors will look to end the season on a high note, as they face Iowa Valley, who is fighting for a playoff spot.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
