Columbus splits with WMU
The Columbus girls? basketball team continued their strong start to the season with a victory over Winfield-Mt. Union on Friday night.
The Wildcats used 19 points from junior Bailey Stroud, as they cruised to a 43-30 victory, which saw Columbus hold WMU to seven combined points in the first and third quarters.
Junior Shania Boyd had 12 points and team highs of three assists and five steals for the Wildcats in the contest, while senior Laura Mincks led the team with seven rebounds.
Columbus jumped on top of the Wolves early, taking a 12-4 lead after one quarter before taking a 23-16 lead into the halftime break.
In the second half, the Wildcats used an 11-3 run in the third quarter to put a cushion between them and WMU before closing out the game for the win.
The Columbus girls improved to 2-1 on the season with the victory.
On the boys? side of the doubleheader, the Wildcats were held to two first-half points by the Wolves, picking up one each in the first and second quarters.
The Wildcats rebounded in the second half, but fell to WMU 53-29.
Columbus was led by Carter Colby?s seven points, while Devon Henry finished the game with a team-high six rebounds.
Tommy Pretz and Colby each had two assists in the contest.
The loss moved the Columbus boys to 0-3 on the year.
The Wildcats will continue their season with a doubleheader at Pekin on Tuesday night.
Highland girls win, boys lose to Wapello
The Highland girls? basketball team improved to 3-0 on the season with an impressive victory over the Arrows on Friday night, downing Wapello 67-36.
The Huskie offense and defense came to play from the beginning of the game, posting 39 first-half points, while limiting Wapello to only 14, including only scoring four in the second quarter.
Kelsey Hora led the team in the game, scoring 20 points and recording 11 rebounds and six assists in the contest, closely followed by senior Cheyann Adamson, who had 19 points, nine rebounds and five steals.
Amy Schnoebelen finished the contest with seven assists, while freshman Ali Stokes had nine points and a team-high 12 rebounds.
Stokes and Hora each notched three blocks on the night, while Briana Davis and Brylee Carolan had two blocks each.
On the boys? side of the doubleheader, Wapello knocked off the Huskies, using four first-quarter 3-pointers to give the Indians a 24-19 lead.
The Huskies couldn?t recover and were unable to get past Wapello, falling 63-58.
Highland then took on West Burlington on Monday night and took home a 69-65 victory.
Trent Lasek led the team with 12 points, while Bill Burton scored 11 points and Nick Sandburg and Tereze Lanfair each had 10 points in the contest.
Highland moves to 2-1 on the season and will take on Pekin at home on Friday night.
Keota boys notch second win
The Keota boys? basketball team didn?t allow double-digit points in a quarter on Friday night, as they cruised to a 76-30 victory over Tri-County.
The Eagles (2-1) had eight players score at least six points in the contest, led by junior Jacob Wickenkamp?s 16 points.
Wickenkamp also notched four rebounds, four assists and a team-high five steals in the contest, while sophomore Hunter Wilson had 13 points.
Sophomore Luke Greiner led the team with five assists in the contest.
The Eagles shot 50 percent from the field for the game (31-of-61), as they jumped out to a 43-16 lead at halftime. The Eagles continued extending that lead in the second half as they finished off a three-game week with a pair of victories.
On the girls? side of the doubleheader with Tri-County, Cortney Hyman led the team with 18 points, but the Eagles fell in a tight 38-35 contest.
Keota led 11-7 after the first quarter, but Tri-County tied the game up at halftime, and outscored the Eagles in the final two periods.
Hyman also led the team with six rebounds and tied with Raigan Sprouse and Erin Chalupa for the team lead with three assists.
The Eagles will face off against Iowa Valley on Tuesday night.
Mid-Prairie splits with NEGL
The Mid-Prairie girls continued their strong conference play on Friday night, led by junior Ali Butters, whose free-throw shooting propelled the Hawks to a 55-46 victory over Northeast, Gooselake.
Butters was 14-of-18 from the free-throw line, en route to scoring a team-high 22 points in the contest, as Mid-Prairie improved to 2-1 (2-0 in conference play) to start the season.
Sophomore Addison Rath and senior Alex Rath each finished in double figures for the Hawks in the game, scoring 15 and 10 points respectively, while Alex finished with a team-high eight rebounds.
Alex Rath and Emily Cayton each had a team-high two assists, while Butters led the team with three steals.
The Mid-Prairie boys fell in their second game of the season against Northeast, Gooselake, losing 67-39.
The Hawks fell to 0-2 on the season with the loss, with Caleb Statler leading the team with seven points.
Nathan Reed, Nolan Faselt and Derek Rich each scored six points in the contest, while Ben Stone finished the game with eight rebounds.
Mid-Prairie will take on Regina in a doubleheader on Tuesday night.
