As the high school wrestling season continues to truck along, so do the Union area squads.
With another weekend of action wrapped, it’s time to take a look at those teams and individuals that competed on Saturday and Sunday.
Washington, Columbus/WMU, Highland, Mid-Prairie, Mt. Pleasant, New London and WACO all took part in the Gary Curtis Invitational on Saturday hosted by Highland.
The Demons were the highest finishers out of the Union area on the day, taking third with 124 points in the 17 team field.
Columbus/WMU finished sixth with 92.5. New London took eighth with 87.5. Mid-Prairie followed in ninth with 82 points.
The host Huskies finished 11th with 62.5 points. WACO finished 15th with 28.5 points and Mt. Pleasant took 16th with 23 points.
For Washington, Aaron Boone was the lone 1st-place finisher. Boone took first at 120.
The Demon’s Caden Greiner took 2nd-place at 126. Chase Greiner was a third-place finisher at 160.
For Mt. Pleasant, Bowen Davis was the lone placer. Davis took second overall at 145.
Russell Coil of Columbus/WMU was a first-place finisher at 285. Ty Scorpil finished second at 120. Jacob Nelson finished third at 106.
New London’s highest placer on the day was Dominic Lopez. Lopez took first at 160. The Tigers Michael Raines was a second-place finisher at 170 and Trent Wilkerson placed third at 220.
Mid-Prairie was led by Mose Yoder who took second at 113. Tucker Miller (132), Kaden Meader (170) and Burke Berry (285) all finished fifth.
Carlos Valenzuela paced Highland with a first-place finish at 132. Luke Guseman finished fourth at 120 and Landon Bell took fifth at 106.
WACO was led by Louden Huisenga, taking second at 160.
Other teams that competed over the weekend include Fairfield, Sigourney-Keota and Van Buren County at the 2023 Ottumwa Invitational.
Fairfield placed second as a team with 151 points. Sigourney-Keota finished fifth and Van Buren placed 12th with 65 points.
For the Trojans, Cason Miller and Dain Burkhart were both first-place finishers at 145 and 182.
Cael McCabe (106), Dre Smithburg (220) and Kegan Pilcher (285) each finished third.
Sigourney-Keota’s Jack Clarahan was a top finisher at 170. Reanah Utterback (106), Reid Molyneux (152), Jake Moore (160) and Hunter Sieren (182) all took fourth.
For Van Buren County, Tyler Stoltz and Darrin Coffman were each fifth-place finishers at 138 and 160.
Cardinal and Pekin both competed in the North Mahaska Wrestling Invitational.
Pekin took seventh overall as a team, while Cardinal finished 14th.
The Panthers Logan Baker and Blake Juhl were both top finishers. Baker took the top spot at 160 and Juhl at 182.
Gavyn Brown followed with a third-place finish at 170.
For Cardinal, Kyran Spees was a third-place finisher at 126. Isaac Cox took fifth at 285.
