Wesleyan wrestling places 4 at Luther Invite

A quartet of Iowa Wesleyan records were able to place at the Luther Invitational on Saturday. The Tiger men’s wrestling team had two fourth place finishes, a fifth and a sixth.

Wyatt Nelson finished fourth in the Open 285 bracket. Nelson went 4-2 on the day to earn his placement.

Nelson lost his first round match against Kobe Simon, a grappler who wrestled unattached. After that, Nelson won four-straight.

Nelson picked up a 3-1 decision over Graceland’s David Toese. He then pinned North Iowa Area Community College’s Jacob Leohr and Buena Vista’s Igor Lakicevic in back-to-back matches.

Nelson’s final win of the day was a 3-2 decision over Alton Allen of Briar Cliff. In the third place match, he fell to Simon again, this time on a 3-0 decision.

Elias Cordero picked up the other fourth-place finish for the Tigers. He went 1-2 on the day to take fourth in the freshman/sophomore 197-pound bracket.

Cordero’s only win was a dominant 10-4 decision over North Iowa Area Community College’s Drew Fox. He lost his other two matches by major decision.

Travis Hodge was fifth in the freshman/sophomore 125-pound bracket. Hodge went 4-2 on the day.

Hodge had two pins on the day, one over Graceland’s Denias Johnson and one against Connor Attkisson of Iowa Western. Hodges scooped up a 12-2 major decision against Jarrod Gilliam of Briar Cliff, and finished his day with a 16-0 technical fall against St. Ambrose’s Ariel Vega.

The Tigers’ final placement of the day went to Austin Abitua, at freshman/sophomore 157. Abitua finished the day 3-3.

Abitua won in three different fashions. His first match was a pinfall against Ethan Blair of St. Ambrose. He won via sudden victory over Curtis Brock in the consolation tournament, and followed that match with a 10-7 decision against Jackson Rolfs of Upper Iowa.

The next time Iowa Wesleyan will be in action, they’ll be on their home floor. The Tigers will compete on Nov. 17 when they host Simpson College for a dual, starting at 6 p.m.
