MT. PLEASANT — Former Mt. Pleasant Panther athlete and current Iowa Wesleyan golfer, Trace white defeated Jim Becker for the Match Play Club Championship in front of a big crowd at Mt. Pleasant Golf and Country Club on Monday afternoon.
White was one stroke up after 9 holes, and four up after 18 holes in the final match, which lasted a grueling 27. Heading to the final 9 holes, white jumped to five up, before a late charge from Becker. Becker won three holes in a row closing White’s lead to two strokes up with three holes to play.
White closed out the match by parring the next two holes to win the match 2 and 1. White had quite a weekend, defeating seven-time winner and defending champion Kiley Miller in the semifinals, and then besting Becker, a 15 time champion, in the finals.
White’s grandfather, Dave Burk is also a two-time champion, winning in 1975 and 1976. This win was White’s first club championship.
