It was a twice is nice night for Washington High School soccer.
It happened against Keokuk, but one match was in Washington and one in Keokuk.
Both the girls and boys teams secured Southeast Conference victories over the Chiefs.
It was the first win of the season for both squads and just the second win since 2015 for the girls.
The Demon girls left no doubt, romping to a 6-1 victory over the Chiefs.
The boys were locked in a scoreless struggle until Zac Stout used his head to score on a corner kick 13 minutes, 26 seconds into the second half.
'It was a corner kick that was perfectly placed by TT,” Stout said referring to Pascual Mendoza. 'I just connected with my head into the left corner.”
The game was played in windy, misting conditions that made the temperature feel colder than it actually was.
'I can't be cold since we won,” WHS boys coach Sally Hart said. 'We had quite a few corner kicks, especially in the first half we had taken quite a few and we were not able to capitalize on any of them. We had some really nice looks but their goalie had some good saves. We had a couple that just missed, and a couple more over the top.”
The Demons had lost their first two matches, but both were non-conference tilts.
'This was nice. It is always nice to get a win on a conference opponent,” Hart said.
'It feels very good to get this win especially since it was a conference win,” Stout said. 'We need those. We are striving to win the conference championship this year. Hopefully we can do that.”
One team that is always standing in the Demons way is Mt. Pleasant, Hart's alma mater.
'Mt. Pleasant is always a tough game and we know we will have to beat them if we want that championship,” Stout said.
Hart was happy with her defense in the match.
'It doesn't take more than one goal to win a game,” she said. 'Once we got up by that one goal, I thought the defense did a good job of holding onto it. We did a little bit of a different formation then we had played the last two games and it worked for us.”
Goalkeeper Benjamin Baughman made 10 saves for the Demons.
