Wildcats eliminated in regional quarterfinals
Fulton goes yard but Columbus/WACO softball out-slugged by West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY — The Columbus/WACO softball team slugged out six runs in the Class 3A Region 8 quarterfinals against West Liberty on Thursday night, but that wasn’t enough to earn the Wildcats a semifinal berth.
West Liberty’s offense carried the load, as the Comets outlasted the Wildcats 8-6 to end Columbus/WACO’s season.
West Liberty scored three runs in the first inning, but Wildcat starter Kennedy Woepking settled in and shut the Comets out. for the next three innings.
Columbus cut the lead to 3-2 with a two-run top of the third, and made it 5-2 with a three-run top of the fifth. West Liberty hit right back with three of its own in the fifth to retake the lead at 6-5.
West Liberty tacked on two runs in the sixth to push their advantage to 8-5. Columbus put together a threat in the seventh, but only scored one run.
In her final high school game, senior Jocelyn Fulton led the way for the Wildcats, going 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBIs. Another senior, Victoria Howell, had one RBI, as did Woepking. Lily Coil and Aracely Garza each had two hits.
Columbus/WACO finished its season 11-10 overall. The Wildcats finished above .500 for the first time since 2015.
West Liberty was beaten by West Burlington in the regional semifinals.
